The term "big cat" is a term used to refer to any of the five living members of the genus 'Panthera' - namely tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard and snow leopard. Except for the snow leopard, these cats are all able to roar. A cheetah and a puma are not considered a "big cat' despite the fact that they are actually quite big! The five big cats are all considered apex predators - or alpha predators meaning that they are at the top of the food chain with no natural predators of their own. The order of the big cats according to size is: tiger, lion, jaguar, leopard and snow leopard.
